How I Got Into Video Editing

Considering I created a whole website dedicated to video editing, I thought I would share how I started out, and why I enjoy it so much.

My brother and I used to love building with K’Nex, those toys that you can connect together to build different creations.  At one point we had built an entire amusement park out of them and it looked pretty cool.  That Christmas we had gotten Flip Video cameras, so I decided it would be fun if I took a video of the whole amusement park.  Once I finished filming it, I figured out how to get all of the videos on to my dad’s computer and I found Windows Movie Maker on there.  I put all the clips in, added a title, added some music, and I was done.  I was pretty proud of it, even though now I look back and see how simple that was.  Then I remembered my dad had a YouTube channel, and so I logged into his account and posted it.   And from there I was hooked.

I probably should’ve created my own YouTube channel but I didn’t think of that then.  Because now I have to login to my dad’s account to post videos.  But it’s too late to start a new channel now considering I’ve posted almost 200 videos on there.  I wish there was a way to transfer your videos to a new account!  Anyway, after I posted the amusement park video I started coming up with new ideas to film.  My brother and I got our friends in on it, and we started making tons of videos.  Now when I go back and watch them, they are hilariously bad, but that’s the process of learning how to edit videos.  I was only 12 when I started so no, I wasn’t very good at it, haha!  After about 5 years, my video editing skills have definitely gotten a lot better.  But I’m still learning new things all the time.  I don’t know if it’s even possible to know EVERYTHING about video editing, it’s a really broad subject.

So why do I enjoy video editing?  Some people think it’s just a lot of work and would never bother to do it, but I think it’s fun.  I’ll admit, sometimes I procrastinate about editing certain videos, because some of them do take a lot of time and work.  But when you’re finished editing a video, it’s a great feeling, and you have this awesome finished product that you created yourself!  It’s also really fun to create videos with your friends and then get to watch it back.  On our YouTube channel we do all kinds of different things from skits, to music videos, to commercial spoofs.  I think it will be cool someday to look back and watch all the videos I created when I was a teenager!
